Ameri-Can was founded by a farming family and we’ve now spent three decades carefully transporting fresh food all over this continent. While you’re enjoying your traditional holiday recipes, we thought we’d share a round-up of food industry predictions for 2019.
More sea food of all types. Noodles made with kelp, other greens from the ocean, water lily seeds, as well as a wider variety of canned fish, suitable for fine dining.
CBD infused beverages and snacks. Derived from the cannabis plant, but without any psychoactive properties, CBD oil is believed by some to have numerous health benefits. Although CBD in food is not yet legal in Canada, it is expected to be in the near future.
Healthy fat snacks. No longer shunned by the health conscious, high quality fats will appear in sweet and savoury snacks from chocolates to flavoured ghee for your popcorn.
Cauliflower is the new veg star. This star has been rising steadily and will continue to be a fan favourite in 2019. Its versatility and ability to substitute as a flour for doughs, as a starch like fluffy mashed potatoes, as well as being delicious simply roasted in the oven, will keep it front and center in the produce section.
A huge increase in meat alternatives. Plant-based protein is going to be everywhere. With environmentalists, animal advocates, and the health conscious all shifting us away from staples like beef, chicken and pork, you’ll see more products that replicate the taste and texture of meat, as well as a wider variety of foods made with grains and legumes.
Prescription eating. While we may not be eating meat, we will want the bones! The collagen in bone broth is thought to improve the skin and hair, as well as providing other health benefits. More people are going to take a serious look at their eating habits and become more knowledgeable about specific foods that boost specific functions. Dandelion greens will emerge as a brain booster, and gut-healthy foods like kombucha will appear in more flavours.
