In a recent study, participants were given some money, with half told to spend it on themselves and half told to spend it on someone else. The federal government provided a two year window for implementation of the more significant changes to the Commercial Vehicle Drivers Hours of Service Regulations. One of those amendments is the requirement for commercial drivers to use electronic logging devices, or ELDs, as of June 3, 2021.

Daimler is opening new parts distribution centres in the U.S. and Canada; and implementing new technology at repair shops, to improve efficiency and keep drivers informed of repair progress. The professional drivers at the helm of our eighteen-wheelers have a wealth of information about their rigs right in front of them. On their dashboards are a voltmeter, tachometer, engine oil pressure gauge, air pressure gauge, and a bunch of temperature gauges for various parts of the truck and trailer. Some also have navigation systems, and as of June 12th, most will have electronic logging devices too.

While the cost of diesel fuel has risen steadily over the last decade, in 2020, the price could jump by 30%. The International Maritime Organization has taken steps to reduce the amount of sulphur pollution caused by ships, leading some to predict that these vessels will convert to diesel fuel, resulting in a significant demand related price hike.
With the rising cost of fossil fuels plus increasing taxes intended to reduce our reliance on them, it certainly seems that it is the time to take a serious look at the overall cost/benefit of electric vehicles for long-haul trucking.
