Happy New Year! The start of a new year is all about renewal; looking ahead and setting goals. With that in mind, we’ve been doing a lot of research on emerging industry trends and predictions. Reading through the opinions of pundits, we came up with a short list. Then, we realized, they were all related, and perhaps not so surprisingly, the common denominator is the continued advancement and adoption of technology.

Driverless trucks is not a new idea, but it is getting closer to reality. Some have talked about dedicated highways for long-haul automated semis, and then there are hyperloops and rapid-transit tunnels that driver piloted trucks can use to get a super speedy lift to the next major city.

With consumers wanting even more personalization in their wearables (and other products), some are predicting final assembly of manufactured goods at the regional or even local level. Three dimensional printers and a few staff at a local hub, for example, putting the finishing touches on items before sending them off on a drone for delivery. (The use of drones for last-mile delivery being another increasing trend.)

Shared supply chain data from production to consumer, including tracking of inventory at retailers and individual deliveries, is another trend that will grow rapidly. It will take some time for all players to implement the equipment and technology that will allow the so-called “single window” to become well established, but the business benefits will propel adoption.

While greater use of cryptocurrencies will also reap business benefits by simplifying timely payments all along the supply chain, it’s the technology behind cryptocurrencies that are even more important. The use of blockchain technology for the creation and processing of import and export documents will come close to eliminating delays through customs.

It’s an exciting time to be in this business, and we’re committed to using every advancement available to provide you with the best services possible.
